Not at all costs

Not at all costs

Both players will probably agree that it was not the best tennis of their lives. The public will agree, however, that it was a sample of a truly sportsmanlike attitude. Both of them wanted to win, of course, but neither at all costs.

The words of appreciation for fair play are due especially to Geoffrey Jasiak. In the first game the umpire announced wrong result – deuce had been proclaimed. The Frenchman, however, knew his own and immediately after losing a point, he moved on to take a sip of water, and then change sides with Tadeusz Kruszelnicki. He knew that he had already lost this game and he was not going to take advantage of the mistake.

The second time, Jasiak immediately corrected other wrong call. The ball could not fall further from the umpire’s sight, so it was not difficult to make a mistake after Kruszelnicki’s winner. On „Out!” The Frenchman responded „In!” and the score was corrected immediately.

Defeated Jasiak had no doubts what to do. He did not intend to contest the final result either, because the victory of the Pole was obvious and not in danger. Kruszelnicki won 6:3, 6:3 and advanced to the Płock Orlen Polish Open finals for the eleventh time, but the first in nine years.
